The actress began acting when was offered a guest role in the TV drama Party of Five in 1996. As she was admitted to New York University by Kate Hudson, her goal was to pursue a career in show business, but not get a degree. After acting in a few small films her audition was for the role that would prove to be her breakthrough in the field. Kate was picked to play Penny Lane in the comedy drama film Almost Famous. The film didn't do very well at the box-office, but it received positive review from critics. It established Kate as an actor within the American film industry.
